A highly nuanced and perceptive review of artists books from Tim Mosely by the curator of Books on Books, Robert Bolick. In particular the employment of terminology from critical discourse in broader fields contributes to advancing the criticality of both the practice and discourse of artists books, as called for by leading scholars in the field including Johanna Drucker.

A preview of a new body of work, the fourth ‘book’ in the Representation by Touch series of artists books,
exhibited at Grey Hand Press 7-9th December 2023.

This suite of work from the Representation by Touch series of artist books emerged out of a studio-based investigation into the relationship between linen fibre and cotton fibre informed by Deleuze and Gutarri’s “smooth and striated spaces”. Creative art practices by nature harbour paradoxes, insoluble tensions, often the very oxygen of creativity. The counterpoints of linen and cotton, the smooth and the striated, are the fuel of this work. (Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, “1440: The Smooth and the Striated” in A Thousand Plateaus, 1987)


Tim Mosely’s essay, “The Haptic and the Emerging Critical Discourse on Artists Books”, is one of 25 complied into a new book, The JAB Anthology, published by the University of Iowa Press 2023. Edited by Brad Freeman and Johanna Drucker this anthology of articles were selected from The Journal of Artists’ Books and contains some of the best critical writing on artists’ books produced in the last quarter of a century.

re-visiting the bush

A new series of etchings in the making, these prints revisit the bush, the “wilderness” and “landscape” that have remained foundational to all the artists creative practice, either figurative or abstract. An ambitious project involving at least three large etchings, and multiple final forms including books.
